Fort Madison has a Mayor/Council form of government and operates by the general laws of a municipal corporation. A Councilperson is elected from each of five voting wards and two are elected at-large for a total seven members. The Mayor is a part-time position, while the City Manager is responsible for day-to-day operations. City Council Meetings are held at 7:00 pm on the 1st & 3rd Tuesdays of each month.
