Water and Sewer
Rathbun Rural Water provides the community of Houghton with water. The sewer system was built in 1969 and consists of two lagoons, which are in good condition. The community has done various improvements to their storm sewer system over the years and is now in excellent condition.
Solid Waste and Recycling
Whaley Waste Systems from Mt. Pleasant provides solid waste collection to the town. The waste is transported to the Great River Regional Waste Authority (GRRWA) facility in Fort Madison. The City pays for residence garbage removal and a fee of $15.00/month per business the remaining balance is paid by the businesses. Curbside recycling is offered and collected every other week.
