The Annual Watermelon Festival is just one of many events you won't want to miss, and a drive to see the replica of the 1st school built in Iowa is another must do!
Attractions
Galland School
Located 3 miles south of town on the Mississippi River Road. This replica depicts the first school house built in the State of Iowa in 1830. The original school was built by Issac Galland.
St. Barnabas Wedding Chapel
The Chapel, located at 300 Chestnut Street, is owned and operated by the Montrose Township Historical Society. The chapel was the old Episcopal Church and cemetary. Built in 1871 for $2000, out of rock blasted fromteh Mississippi River during construction of the canal. The St. Barnabas Choir practices and performs here on Memorial Day & Christmas. Contact a member of the Montrose Township Historical Society for more information on rental.
Riverview Park
The park was the location of hte first Fort Des Moines as well as the landing site of the Morman exodus from Nauvoo, IL. There are historical markers located in the park.
Events
Christmas Concert
On the 1st or 2nd Sunday in December, the St. Barnabas Choir holds a Christmas Concert in The St. Barnabas Wedding Chapel.
Fall Festival and Fish Fry
This event is held at the Presbyterian Church the 3rd Saturday in September with a fish fry, white elephants, and a bake sale.
Memorial Day Concert
The Memorial Day Concert is held at the St. Barnabas Wedding Chapel and is put on by the St. Barnabas Choir.
Watermelon Festival
This festival is held in the City Park on the west end of town along Highway 404 on the 3rd weekend of August. There is a parade on Saturday, food, carnival, entertainment, and free watermelon.
